Morning Song – Mercy

May 22, 2024

What do you get when you’ve lost your faith in God (or organized religion, or both) but daily life still confronts you with fundamentally religious challenges?

You get something like singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun’s “Mercy”.

From the straight-out-of-church opening chord to the chorus to the restlessly searching questions for meaning in the midst of struggle and loss from Oladokun and rapper Tim Gent, “Mercy” is an avowedly secular (“I don’t wanna talk to God/I just wanna smoke weed“) hymn for a generation of seekers trying to make sense of a world where the old ways aren’t working.

Yeah, moral of the story, everybody…needs a little mercy.
