Morning Song – If You Just Hold Out
There’s nothing new or fancy about the message the Rev. James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir are singing in “If You Just Hold Out”. Imploring the faithful to keep believing even in their darkest hour is a Christian tradition that goes back at least as far as the first Good Friday.
What makes “If You Just Hold Out” compelling music, even nearly four decades after its recording, is the way everything extraneous has been stripped away: there’s not an extra note, chord or flourish (instrumentally or vocally) that doesn’t serve the message of the song. It’s like listening to an elder who’s been through the purifying fires of life’s troubles and is left with nothing but words of solid gold wisdom.
If you just hold out until tomorrow, if you just keep the faith through the night;
If you just hold out until tomorrow, everything will be all right.
