“Snowden’s Jig” is a bold and powerful piece of cultural reclamation by The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Originally credited to and popularized by Dan Emmett, the most popular minstrel performer of his day, under the title “Genuine Negro Jig”, the song was likely written by Emmett’s northern Ohio neighbor, Thomas Snowden, and regularly performed by The Snowden Family Band, the longest-lasting Black band of the 19th century.
