Morning Song – I Had No Right

April 30, 2024

Fr. Daniel Berrigan, SJ died in NYC eight years ago today at the age of 94.

Today we’ll remember his being “born into eternal life” (in the words of the Catholic burial rite) with singer-songwriter Dar Williams’ lovely tribute ballad, “I Had No Right”, which recalls Berrigan’s participation in the 1968 Catonsville 9 draft board raid, and their “…fracture of good order, the burning of paper instead of children, the angering of the orderlies in the front parlor of the charnel house“. They could not, as Berrigan later said in court, “...so help us God, do otherwise.”
