Morning Song – Home By Another Way

January 6, 2022

You won’t find “Home By Another Way” on James Taylor’s Christmas album. It’s an obscure deep cut buried on one of the largely undistinguished but consistently professional albums from the long middle of his career, when he’d overcome his drug addictions, largely tamed the depression that’s accompanied him through life, and had already produced most of the work for which he’s best known.

But it’s a startlingly appropriate and deeply resonant song for Three Kings’ Day, built as it is on Matthew’s account of the what Taylor calls “those magic men, the Magi, some people call them wise“, their encounter with King Herod, and subsequent decision to go “home by another way” so as to protect a child from the monarch’s murderous ways.

“Steer clear of royal welcomes,
Avoid a big to-do;
A king who would slaughter the innocents,
Will not cut a deal for you.”
