Morning Song – Love Me Like A Man

August 3, 2017

Chris Smithers wrote “Love You Like A Man” in an attempt “to write a traditional blues ‘male- braggadocio’ song from the perspective of a nineteen-sixties new-age sensitive guy“.

His good friend Bonnie Raitt took it and did to it more or less what Aretha Franklin did to Otis Redding’s “Respect”: tweaked the lyrics, reworked the rhythm, adjusted the tempo, gave it a bluesier feel, sang it with her own inimitable voice, made it wholly her own, and in doing so, created a feminist standard that countless female vocalists have covered.

Don’t you put yourself above me, just try to love me like a man.
