Morning Song – Enjoy Yourself

July 21, 2017

When most of the Jackson family (except brother Jermaine, who had married Hazel Gordy, daughter of Motown CEO Berry Gordy) signed with Epic Records in 1975, they worked with the company’s Philadelphia International subsidiary.

That made sense for two reasons: Philadelphia International founder/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff had modeled their company on Motown and, more importantly, were at the peak of their considerable hit-making powers.

And hit-making is what they did: “Enjoy Yourself” is danceable ear candy—the kind of song that, in the hands of The Jacksons (and Philly International, and Motown), seemed effortless, as if it had always existed in the air and all you had to do was catch it in your hand. It’s also the first music video the band made, and while they’re all good performers, the 18 year old Michael just “pops” off the screen*.

*And no, it’s not the sparkling white suit and silver-sequined shoes because they’ve all got those.
