Morning Song – Hope The High Road

June 29, 2017

As a way of dealing with life’s little problems, intoxication has its appeal…even, its advantages. But for the big challenges—the ones that don’t go away in a day, or a month, or even a year—there’s nothing like clear-eyed sobriety.

Jason Isbell knows a little something about this hard-won truth. With five years sobriety under his belt, and a new album on the charts, Isbell sounds ready for the long haul: making a marriage work, being a father…and facing the challenges of citizenship when things go horribly wrong.

On his new single, “Hope The High Road”, Isbell puts the blues (anger, despair, confusion) in the verses and the gospel (understanding, empathy, hope) in the chorus to create (along with his band, The 400 Unit) a tight, angry, blistering, rousing, hard-rocking anthem and, perhaps as importantly, something of a musical, emotional and political road map for people like him dealing with the reality of a Trump administration and a Congress controlled by the likes of Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan.

Last year was a son of a bitch,
For nearly everyone we know;
But I ain’t fighting with you down in a ditch,
I’ll meet you up here on the road.
…(And) I hope the high road leads you home again,
To a world you want to live in.
