Morning Song – You And Me

June 27, 2017

The lyrics to Dave Matthews Band’s 2010 single, “You And Me”, tell one story—of a lover and his beloved running away, alone together, “without a trace we’ll be gone…to the end of the world…we’re gonna spin through the stars“.

The orchestration—and the embedded video below—tells a different story.

“You And Me” begins and ends with Matthews alone, strumming an entrancing, beguiling chord progression on his guitar. In between however, instruments and voices and bodies are added, individually at first, and eventually by the dozens, until Matthews and his guitar (and the unseen woman he’s singing to) are surrounded aurally and physically by “a great cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 12: 1).

This is, of course, true. Any great, long-lasting love exists, not on its own, but surrounded and infused and uplifted by a community of countless others, living and dead, and carries on beyond itself in ways unimaginable when the journey first began.

Oh, and when the kids are old enough,
We’re gonna teach them to fly
