Morning Song – Whipping Post

June 8, 2017

“What we all ought to recognize about the late Gregg Allman…is that, right from jump, he was a first-class blues songwriter. “Whipping Post” can stand with anything Willie Dixon ever wrote….”

That’s a pretty bold claim by Esquire’s Charles Pierce…but take a listen for yourself and decide whether you think he’s wrong.

(It’s astounding to realize Allman was just 21 years old when he wrote “Whipping Post”—with its 11/8 intro that slides smoothly into a 12/8 groove, lyrics that sound like they’ve seeped through centuries of history, and a unison chromatic scale (starting at 3:48) building to those climactic dotted half note guitar screams.)
