Morning Song – One Way Out

May 29, 2017

In a better world, the racially integrated, less politicized, more culturally and socially expansive Southern culture exemplified by Gregg Allman and the band he and his brother Duane founded nearly 50 years ago would play a larger role in our society, culture and politics.

An old Elmore James song, “One Way Out“—especially live in concert where it could stretch out for 10 minutes or more—is a classic example of how the Allman Brothers Band melded blues, country, rock, jazz and psychedelia, all tied together by Gregg’s powerful, worldly-wise and weary voice, into something new and distinctive in American music.

Gregg Allman died last week at age 69 (which, in truth, is longer than most bodies subjected to the kind of hard living Gregg engaged in for many years would have lasted).
