Morning Song – Sermonette

April 1, 2017

There’s a difference between Sunday preaching and weekday preaching. Sunday is the Lord’s day, a day of rest…so there’s lots of time to spend in church, and a good preacher can really stretch out: start out slow, take her time, tell a story or two to get into the sermon, crescendo to a peak, then back off before building to another (and another).

But a midweek service is different: it’s shorter because people are busier and don’t have as much time. So the preacher is more just keeping his chops in shape, showing himself (and his congregation) what he could do if he wanted…but that’s what Sunday is for.

That’s what Nat Adderley does with his brother’s song, “Sermonette”—give you enough of a taste (just a bit over 3 minutes) of what he could do with that muted trumpet and his piano trio if he stretched out (say, for a whole album).
