Morning Song – Ladies First
When royalty announces itself, sometimes all you can do is bow down in awe and gratitude.
Queen Latifah arrived in 1989 about as close to fully formed as possible. Her debut album, All Hail The Queen, announced her ambitions and her second single, “Ladies First”, blew down the doors of misogyny and sexism in the music industry (and beyond). Nearly a full generation down the road, its lyrical flow, fresh beats, iconic images and regal command still set a standard for what it means to be unapologetically Black, unashamedly feminist, and unabashedly powerful.
A woman can bear you break you take you,
Now it’s time to rhyme can you relate to,
A sister dope enough to make you holler and scream….
