Morning Song – I Claim Jesus First

January 8, 2017

Yes, that’s Sr. Rosetta Tharpe with the kernel (starting at 1:39) of pretty much every Chuck Berry solo ever (and by extension, a sizable majority of all rock & roll guitar solos ever), in her early 1940s rendition of “I Claim Jesus First”.

More importantly, there’s the rich, deep theological soil from which that blazing guitar solo emerges—the notion that a Negro child of Arkansas sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South has a dignity and power unimagined by the dominant culture.

I’m God’s own child by birth, highest honor on the earth;

I claim Jesus first and that’s enough for me.
