Morning Song – La Mer

December 6, 2016

Decades before the rise of the “singer-songwriter” niche in American pop music, French entertainer Charles Trenet made a career while recording only his own songs, never to greater renown than with “La Mer”, based (so the story goes) on a poem he wrote as a teenager while gazing out the window of a train traveling along the Mediterranean coast.

Unlike Bobby Darin’s 1959 English cover version (and Top 10 hit), “Beyond The Sea”, Trenet’s “La Mer” isn’t a love song set by the sea; it’s a love song to the sea.

La mer a bercé mon cœur pour la vie
(The sea has cradled my heart for life)
