Morning Song – Oh Ven, Oh Ven Emmanuel

November 27, 2016

This Advent hymn (“Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel” in English) is a glorious cross-cultural mashup—with its origins stretching back at least as far as 8th century (C. E.) Rome, and perhaps a couple of centuries earlier. From the original Latin, it’s been translated into numerous languages (English, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, etc.) and set to multiple melodies.

This Spanish version, performed by Voces De Los Andes, who hail from St. Patrick’s Parish, just down the street from the Rhode Island state capitol…approximately 4,500 miles from their ancestral homes, is another example of the remarkably durable and endlessly adaptable nature of the song.
