Morning Song – Twist And Shout

November 18, 2016

When Salt-N-Pepa covered “Twist And Shout” 25 years after The Beatles broke through (and John Lennon nearly broke his voice) with their cover of The Isley Brothers Top 20 hit, they more than fulfilled this little blog’s First Rule Of Cover Songs*.

Hear how they strip the song down to its essentials (the beat and the bass), add their own raps to flesh out the verses, and most importantly, put a womanist spin on the cocky, assertive, strutting sexuality of the original, inverting the “male gaze”…and delighting it.

*You’ve got to bring something new to it.
