Morning Song – I’m A Rolling

November 13, 2016

Having a bad week? Lost in confusion? Overwhelmed by the powerful forces arrayed against you?

Consider going back to the great Negro spirituals—not for a quick fix, but for a foothold, a rock to stand on to regain your footing.

Songs like “I’m A Rolling”, performed here by The Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi.

It’s deceptively upbeat-sounding, and unblinkingly straightforward in describing the situation the singers find themselves in (“rolling through an unfriendly world“).

It offers no solutions, just asks (and asks, and keeps asking) for help (“Oh, mother…brother…sister…preacher…won’t you help me?“).

What kind of help? Not help to fight, or escape, or build. “Help me to pray.

First things first. Get your mind and your spirit fixed first; what to do, what action to take, about your situation will follow.
