Morning Song – Night Creature: Stalking Monster

October 29, 2016

In writing “Night Creature”, Duke Ellington said his goal wasto try to make the symphony swing“.  It helped that he had his own orchestra, then (1956) at one of the many peaks of its considerable powers, along for the ride, too.

Ray Nance, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges and Lawrence Brown solo on the second movement, “Stalking Monster”, as Ellington evokes “that imaginary monster we all fear we shall have to meet some midnight, but when we meet him I’m sure that we shall find that he too does the boogie-woogie.

Enjoy.
