Morning Song – Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)

October 14, 2016

In the early 1960s dance crazes happened at warp speed…especially considering there was no internet.

Take the Mashed Potato for example. There were at least a dozen singles released—in 1962 alone—to try to capitalize on its popularity.

Philadelphia native Dee Dee Sharp had two of them: “Mashed Potato Time” and “Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)”, and it’s “Gravy” that must have had the self-appointed guardians of moral virtue of the day up in arms.

Not only does it make clear that what would become known as the Sexual Revolution was, in large part, a feminist project; it also makes it sound fun.

What’s your dancing, without romancing?
So put that something extra on the line.

Gimme (gravy) on my mash potatoes….
