Morning Song – RC Cola & A Moon Pie
Coming out of the Great Depression, a “RC Cola & a moon pie” was a workingman’s treat. It meant you had enough money to go to a diner and buy lunch (rather than make it at home). But it also meant you didn’t have enough money for a full meal and you needed a lot of calories to make it through the afternoon shift. RC Cola (perpetually stuck behind Coke and Pepsi, and competing on price) and a moon pie—marshmallow (gelatin and sugar), graham crackers and a sugary icing—made for a cheap, filling, tasty and nutritious (well…3 out of 4 ain’t bad) meal.
Kentucky native and NRBQ keyboardist Terry Adams knew whereof he sang.
