Morning Song – San Franciscan Nights

October 4, 2016

It’s the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, so why not a love song to a city named after him?

Eric Burdon and the Animals wrote “San Franciscan Nights” after gigging there during an unusually warm stretch of weather in 1967 (thus accounting for the otherwise inexplicable line,”on a warm San Franciscan night”).

Part anti-war song, part homage to the Summer of Love, part civil rights cry, part acid trip, maybe even—if a passing comment by Burden 40 years later can be relied upon—part reminiscence of an evening with San Francisco chanteuse Janis Joplin, “San Franciscan Nights” is 100% a love song to the City by the Bay.
