Morning Song – The Rising

September 22, 2016

“The Rising” is the title track to Bruce Springsteen’s “9/11” album. For the close of Springsteen’s latest US tour, it was scheduledand played—as the penultimate song of the main set.

Hearing it 15 years after the Twin Towers came down was a reminder of an alternate path our country could have taken in response to the attacks—one of grief, self-sacrifice and mercy. It was also a reaffirmation—in the lyrics yes, but more so in the harmonies and the steady, throbbing bass line—of the practical and redemptive power of love, faith and human connection.

Sky of blackness and sorrow (a dream of life)
Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)
Sky of glory and sadness (a dream of life)
Sky of mercy, sky of fear (a dream of life)
Sky of memory and shadow (a dream of life)
Your burning wind fills my arms tonight
Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)
Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life

Come on up for the rising….
