Morning Song – Elevator Operator

August 29, 2016

(One in a series of posts inspired by President Obama’s 2016 Spotify Summer Playlist.)

When it comes to politics, there’s one thing everyone in the Music Department here at MassCommons World Headquarters agrees on: the next US president won’t be nearly as cool as the current one.

Exhibit #2,437,698 is President Obama’s summer playlist. It’s not just that his playlists have OGs like Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, Miles and Aretha mixed in with giants like Jay-Z, Nas, Janelle Monáe and Chance the Rapper.

They also have songs like today’s “Elevator Operator” by Australian indie-grunge rocker Courtney Barnett—quirky, observant, wry, insightful, edgy and oddly buoyant. Enjoy it while you can, people. If the next president even has a summer playlist, it’ll sound nothing like this.
