Morning Song – Gloria Patri

August 21, 2016

Back in 2008, Wynton Marsalis composed his “Abyssinian Mass” as part of the celebrations surrounding the bicentennial of Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church. (Hey, if a Lutheran like Johann Sebastian Bach can write a “Mass In B Minor”, then Wynton Marsalis can write a Mass for a Baptist Church.)

Marsalis’ “Gloria Patri” delights in the immanence of God in this world, skittering in and out of musical genres, mashing up jazz, gospel and classical traditions, as if to say “There’s a sign of God’s presence; and there’s a sign of God’s presence; and there’s a sign of God’s presence…. And isn’t it great!?!?!

“…World without end (clap, clap),

Amen, Amen, Amen (clap, clap).”
