Still I Rise: Serena Williams, Maya Angelou & A Black Ocean
Yesterday Serena Williams won the Wimbledon women’s championship…again. In a week of very bad racial news in American politics and public life, it was once again left to sports to provide some good news, and a ray of hope.
It is too much to ask of athletes and their competitions that they bear the burden of overcoming the deepest of human evils. And yet, precisely because our games and sports are among the most purely and ruthlessly meritocratic institutions we have, they often do.
It is to the BBC’s credit that they created this video (and ESPN’s shame that they did not)—marrying Serena’s fiercely powerful and muscularly graceful performances at Wimbledon with excerpts from Maya Angelou’s indomitable poetry.
