Morning Song – Takin’ It To The Streets

June 14, 2016

As it turned out, by the time the Doobie Brothers got around to releasing “Takin’ It To The Streets” in 1976, not too many people were still interested in taking it to the streets.

That historical hiccup doesn’t change the fact it’s a terrific song—catching the listener’s ear from the opening bars, Michael McDonald’s husky voice starting with a deceptively laid back narration over wide-spaced piano chords, the song picking up urgency as it reaches the bridge (“You, telling me the things you’re gonna do for me…”), then exploding into defiance over a tight backbeat (“Takin’ it to the streets!”).

The timing may not have been right, but it’s a timeless message: if you don’t like the way things are, don’t sit around waiting for someone else to change them (they’ll probably screw it up)—make the change yourself.
