Morning Song – Song For Sonny Liston

June 8, 2016

A regular reader* sent us Mark Knopfler’s “Song For Sonny Liston”.

Liston’s the bad guy/buffoon in the Muhammad Ali rise-to-greatness story, the terrifyingly dangerous slugger and champion revealed as a paper tiger by the pretty, young rising star.

“Song For Sonny Liston” restores Liston’s humanity and dignity with two tools of a master musical craftsman: a low, driving, hypnotic, country-blues riff and the deceptively simple artifice of telling Liston’s life story.

Criss-crossed on his back,
Scars from his daddy like slavery tracks;
The second-last child was the second-last king,
Never again was it the same in the ring.
