Morning Song – On Top Of The World

March 22, 2016

Here’s the thing about writing a song called, “On Top Of The World”:  when you sing it, you’ve got to take your audience there. Right?  I mean, “On Top Of The World” can’t be a  mid-tempo ballad, or an easy-going country rocker, or a laid-back, observational folk song.

Some titles just contain a promise, and it’s up to the performer to deliver. When Mavis Staples starts singing “I’ll Take You There”, there’s an implicit promise she’s making (and delivers on) that where you end up will be different from where you started.

Well, just like Mavis Staples (yes, I went there), that’s what vocalist extraordinaire Nicole Nelson does, starting about 3 minutes in and right through to the exhilarating, breathtaking conclusion of “On Top Of The World”—takes you to a different—and better—place.
