Morning Song – Sunday Bloody Sunday

March 17, 2016

It’s the feast day of the “Apostle of Ireland”, and one of the distinctive (and little-noted) aspects of St. Patrick’s evangelizing work is that it was accomplished without the force of arms (unlike…well…most Christian evangelization around the world).

U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday” has long since passed into the “greatest hits” section of a middle-aged classic rock band’s performances, but when first written, it was hugely controversial.  In the Ireland of the early 1980s there simply wasn’t room for a politics or music of nonviolence that condemned equally the “hard men” on both sides of “The Troubles”.

I like to think St. Patrick would have enjoyed the song.
