Morning Song – Can’t Let Go

March 9, 2016

Calling someone a “a songwriter’s songwriter” is high praise in music circles.  So what happens when one songwriter’s songwriter covers a song by another songwriter’s songwriter?

If you’re lucky, you get something like Lucinda Williams’ terrific cover of Randy Weeks’ “Can’t Let Go”, one of the great “I’ve been dumped but I’m definitely not ready to move on” songs.

The two-step bass, the shuffle beat and the keening slide guitars (there’s a dobro in there somewhere too) are enough for a good song. Williams’ aching, defiant, slurred, sultry voice makes it great.

Round every corner something I see,
Brings me right back how it used to be,
Well it’s over – I know it – but I can’t let go
.

P.S. Best stick figure video illustrations ever.
