Morning Song – Doo Wop (That Thing)

March 8, 2016

There is so much goodness and greatness packed into Lauryn Hill’s first single, “Doo Wop (That Thing)”. Written, recorded and produced by Hill, it debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 (only the 10th song ever to do so, the first by a rapper, and still the only by a female rapper), won two Grammys and four MTV video awards.  And that’s just the recognition it got from the music industry.

Even more impressive—and enjoyable—is the way Hill seamlessly weaves together 1960s R&B with 1990s hip-hop, “conservative” sexual ethics with radical feminism, and Black nationalist pride that extends across generations and finds its full affirmation in that quintessential urban celebration of the “beloved community”: a block party.

Don’t be a hard rock, when you really are a gem.
