Morning Song – Righteously

March 2, 2016

Doug Pettibone’s bluesy, hard-rocking, head-banging, distortion-and-feedback-filled guitar solos on Lucinda Williams’ “Righteously” come after the song’s final verse.

Flirt with me don’t keep hurtin’ me,
Don’t cause me pain;
Be my lover don’t play no game,
Just play me John Coltrane.

Which is just perfect because the guitar says what a million more words can’t. If, after so much heart-to-heart talking, arguing, fighting, soul-searching and soul-baring, the narrator’s lover doesn’t understand what playing John Contrane means, then there’s nothing more to be said.

Sometimes it’s not me…it’s you.
