Morning Song – Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

February 28, 2016

This 1909 a capella version of the old Negro spiritual, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, is the oldest recording we could find of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.  The Fisk Jubilee Singers started performing secret slave songs of resistance and inspiration during Reconstruction, both to preserve their culture (all but two had been slaves themselves) and their school (they were a key fundraising source for the then debt-ridden four year-old school). They’re still singing today.

Happy Black History Month.
