Morning Song – McGriff Avenue

February 1, 2016

You’ll recognize “McGriff Avenue”; it’s on the funky side of town—deep, clean-cut grooves, hard-bopping bass lines, high-scratching rhythm guitar licks, and a sax section that positively dances in unison through the melody.

By 2006 Jimmy McGriff and his trusty Hammond B3 organ had been working this neighborhood for so long that he’d earned the right not to show up (or at least, to solo) until nearly three minutes into “McGriff Avenue”.  When he does, it’s with the easy assurance and delightful command of a man who’s presided over this particular neighborhood for decades and is justifiably proud of what it’s become.

It’s Monday morning.  What’s happening in your neighborhood?
