Morning Song – For Unto Us A Child Is Born

December 25, 2015

On the 300th anniversary of the first public performance of Handel’s Messiah, Mervyn Warren produced Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, one of the great cover albums know to humankind (or, at least, to the archivists who roam the dusty bowels of the Music Department here at MassCommons World Headquarters).

“For Unto Us A Child Is Born” by Sounds Of Blackness is worth the price of admission all by itself.  From hot jazz to rap, “quiet storm” to African drumming, English to Swahili, cakewalk to gospel, Sounds Of Blackness takes “For Unto Us A Child Is Born” and does things to it that would have amazed and (one hopes) delighted Handel himself.  It’s a completely different, utterly faithful and exhilaratingly joyous reinterpretation.

Merry Christmas.
