Morning Song – The Little Drummer Boy/Hot Hot Hot

December 22, 2015

I don’t know what Wellesley College graduate and classical music composer Katherine Kennicott Davis (who wrote “The Little Drummer Boy” in 1941) or the Trapp Family Singers (who first recorded it in 1955) would make of Wyclef Jean’s 1998 cover/medley. Presumably they’d be pleased the song was being performed at the White House and, even though intellectual disabilities weren’t discussed in polite company in their day, presumably they’d be pleased it was done as a benefit for a charitable organization like the Special Olympics.

But what they’d make of his brash, iconoclastic (“I’m just a poor boy from the projects!“) recasting of “The Little Drummer Boy”, and his pairing of it with “this party song…this fundamental jam“, i.e.,  Arrow’s “Hot Hot Hot” (made famous by David Johansen’s Buster Poindexter persona), I don’t dare speculate.
