Morning Song – War

December 9, 2015

(One in a series of songs that Rolling Stone left out of its 2013 “reader’s poll” of the “10 best protest songs of all time”.)

It’s not Bob Dylan’s fault that Rolling Stone put his “Masters Of War” atop their list of the “10 best protest songs of all time“.  It’s a great song.  And it’s not Dylan’s fault Rolling Stone left Edwin Starr’s “War” off their list.

But come on, really.  Which song do you want to hear/sing at your anti-war rally?

(After all, as Arlo Guthrie famously said, “If you want to end the war and stuff, you gotta sing loud.”)

P. S. Starr had a #1 hit with “War” in the summer of 1970, making it by some measures the most popular “protest song” of all time.  Sixteen years later, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band had a top 10 single with their cover of “War”.
