Morning Song – Struttin’ With Some Barbecue

November 24, 2015

The literal-minded among you may be wondering who in their right mind would go out walking with a big plate of barbecue…and you’d be right.  To do so would almost certainly result in a good walk spoiled or (more importantly) a waste of some good barbecue.

But composer Lil Hardin—better known as the second Mrs. Louis Armstrong, and the pianist in Armstrong’s Hot Five on this original recording of “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue”—wasn’t talking about that kind of barbecue.  According to the distinguished lexicographer, Cab Calloway, in his essential reference work, The Hepster’s Dictionary, barbecue is “a girlfriend, a beauty“.  So, something saucy, spicy and delicious that will fill you up and leave you feeling satisfied…just not in the gastronomical sense of the word.  Kind of like Ms. Hardin’s song.
