Afternoon Song – He’s Right On Time

November 22, 2015

You could take the old-time gospel groove of Dorothy Love Coates & The Original Gospel Harmonettes, speed it up slightly, add a driving James Jamerson bass line and give it a Motown 4 x 4 beat with tambourine accents on the 2 and the 4.

You could smooth out the gospel shouts of the Original Gospel Harmonettes and replace them with the breathy pop harmonies of the Supremes.

And you could cut Coates’ from-the-gut, fervent, push-it-to-the-limit-because-that’s-how-much-Jesus-means-to-me singing while slotting in Diana Ross’ cool, coy, ice-wouldn’t-melt-in-her-mouth vocal stylings.

If you did then you’d have “You Can’t Hurry Love“.

But why would you want that when you’ve already got “He’s Right On Time”?

He’s a God you can’t hurry, but He’ll be there, don’t worry;

He may not come when you want Him, but He’s right on time.
