Morning Song – Sweet Touch Of Love

November 11, 2015

The great Allen Toussaint died yesterday.  There’s no way to listen to New Orleans music over the past 60 years without being touched by Toussaint…which means there’s no way to listen to American popular music—from Lee Dorsey to Glen Campbell to Labelle to Jay-Z—over the past 60 years without running into Toussaint’s vast and profound influence.

Music critic Greg Mitchell summed up Toussaint’s importance with this tweet:

Musically speaking, there is no higher praise.

Here’s Toussaint from his self-titled 1971 album singing “Sweet Touch Of Love”.

You brought out the best in me,
Made me leave the rest of me behind,
Oh yes you did….

Allen Toussaint, son of New Orleans, 1938 – 2015.  RIP.
