Morning Song – Empty Heart

November 10, 2015

If you’re wondering where that Muscle Shoals-like country-gospel sound on Vermont native Grace Potter’s new single, “Empty Heart”, comes from, blame it on the hippies—like Potter’s parents—who moved “back to the land”.

Northern New England towns are full of them: gray-haired now, they were young adults in the 1970s, mostly college-educated, mostly from the sprawling East Coast megalopolis, who followed the newly built interstate highways to small towns like Waitsfield, VT.  The ones who survived the first cold winter put down roots, started businesses, and made the decades-long transition from being “people from away” to “locals”.

They also brought their record collections.  That combination doesn’t explain everything about the indie-rock scene…but it’s a big piece of it.
