Morning Song – Land Of Canaan

November 3, 2015

In the clip below, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls introduces “Land Of Canaan” by saying “This is a rock and roll song“.

And even though it’s two folkies strumming acoustic guitars in a coffeehouse, she’s absolutely right.  Ray attacks her guitar—and the microphone—with all the aggression, desperation and confidence of a rocker like Bruce Springsteen in full Darkness On The Edge Of Town punk-edged fury.

Add Emily Saliers’ sweet, yearning vocal harmonies and the Bible-haunted imagery of Ray’s lyrics and you’ve got one of the great post-breakup songs of the late 1980s.
