Morning Song – Stand By Me

October 25, 2015

The great 1961 Ben E. King pop standard “Stand By Me” has its roots in Dr. Charles A. Tindley’s 1905 hymn of the same title, with a big assist to the incomparable Sr. Rosetta Tharpe who took the stately hymn and gave it a beat when she recorded it in 1941.

When I’m crossing Jordan river, stand by me;

Jesus’ breast, be my pillow, stand by me;

Now the water is chilly and cold;

The love of Jesus is in my soul;

Lightning flash; thunder roll; stand by me.
