Morning Song – S. O. B.

October 21, 2015

As Ralph Ellison wrote, ““The blues is an impulse to keep the painful details and episodes of a brutal experience alive in one’s aching consciousness, to finger its jagged grain, and to transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy but by squeezing from it a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism.”

That’s what Nathaniel Rateliff and his band, The Night Sweats, do with their new country-soul hit, “S. O. B.”.  If you’ve ever had the DTs—or know someone who’s had the DTs—“S. O. B.” is a song of terrifying, exhilarating, bone-deep honesty.

But that’s the power of the blues—the ability to take life’s most brutal and horrifying experiences and turn them into music that can (maybe, if you’re lucky) help you face your worst demons and make it through another night.
