Evening Song – Flamenco Sketches

There’s a certain kind of late-night jazz—slow and smoky, meditative and moving—that can leave the listener both completely satisfied and wanting more.  Songs like “Flamenco Sketches” off Miles Davis’ great modal masterpiece, Kind Of Blue.  As Miles said at that time in an interview with Nat Hentoff, “No chords … gives you a lot more freedom and space to hear things. When you go this way, you can go on forever. You don’t have to worry about changes and you can do more with the [melody] line. It becomes a challenge to see how melodically innovative you can be.
